National Collegiate Athletic Association

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a member-led organization dedicated to the well-being and lifelong success of college athletes.  Nearly half a million college athletes make up the 19,886 teams that send more than 57,661 participants to compete each year in the NCAA's 90 championships in 24 sports across 3 divisions.1

Three Divisions of the NCAA

Division I:

Generally have more students and larger athletic departments. Schools in this division can give athletic scholarships.
           
Division II:

Emphasize a life balance in which academically and athletically gifted students can compete at a high level. This division can give athletic scholarships.
           
Division III:

Academics are the primary focus. The sports seasons are shorter reducing time away from academic studies and other campus activities. This division cannot give athletic scholarships.

NCAA Division Eligibility Information

  • The NCAA logo, featuring a blue circle and the letters 'NCAA'.

    For students to be eligible to compete in NCAA sports during their first year at Division Ⅰ school, they must graduate high school and meet all of the following requirements:
     

    • Complete 16 core courses in following areas:
      • English – 4 years
      • Math - Algebra Ⅰ or higher – 3 years
      • Natural /Physical Science – 2 years
      • Social Science – 2 years
      • Additional English, Math or Natural /Physical Science – 1 year
      • Additional English, math, Natural /Physical Science, Social Science, Foreign Language, Comparative Religion or Philosophy – 4 years 

     

    • Complete 10 core courses, including seven (7) in English, Math or Natural /Physical Science, before the start of 7th semester.

     

    • Earn at least a 2.3 GPA in core courses

  • The NCAA Division II logo features a blue circle with white text.

    For students to be eligible to compete in NCAA sports during their first year at Division Ⅱ school, they must graduate high school and meet all of the following requirements:
     

    • Complete 16 core courses in following areas:
      • English – 3 years
      • Math - Algebra Ⅰ or higher – 2 years
      • Natural /Physical Science  * 1 year of Lab science, if offered – 2 years
      • Social Science – 2 years
      • Additional English, Math or Natural /Physical Science – 3 year
      • Additional English, math, Natural /Physical Science, Social Science, Foreign Language, Comparative Religion or Philosophy – 4 years 

     

    • Earn at least a 2.2 GPA in core courses

    • Colleges and universities in Division Ⅲ place highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of all students' academic programs
